I had a serious facial injury due to a fall. The eye orbital was fractured. My eye muscle was trapped below the fracture, which immobilized my eye movement. My reconstructive surgery was performed by Dr. David Rasmussen who I met in the emergency room at Scripps La Jolla. The complicated surgery went very well. Dr. Rasmussen was very supportive and attentive to my concerns throughout. I had many worries about the different physical traumas and the recovery process associated with the fall. He visited me before and after the surgery in the hospital and personally followed up with me weekly during my recovery, either by phone text or in-person office visits. He seemed genuinely concerned with my progress and very patiently answered my many questions. I feel very lucky to have had Dr. Rasmussen for my maxillofacial surgeon!

I had an amazing experience with Dr. Rasmussen and Dr. Scholer for my wisdom tooth extraction. They continuously checked on me to make sure I was doing okay and made the entire experience so much less stressful than I expected, I was also shocked by how quick and smooth the procedure was. Thank you both for making the experience such a positive one.

I had a consultation with Dr. Bischoff for wisdom tooth ext, and I couldn’t have asked for a better experience. I’ve always been very anxious about dental work, but from the moment I met him, he made me feel comfortable and at ease. He took the time to explain everything clearly, answered all of my questions, and reassured me throughout the appointment. I highly recommend Dr. Bischoff to anyone, especially if you’re nervous about oral surgery.

What Are Dental Implants?

Dental implants are permanent tooth replacements that function like natural tooth roots. Each implant consists of a small titanium post that is surgically placed into the jawbone. Once the implant fuses with the bone through a process called osseointegration, it provides a stable foundation for a dental crown, bridge, or full-arch restoration.

Unlike removable dentures, dental implants are designed to stay securely in place while preserving jawbone health and restoring natural chewing function.

Dental implants can replace:

  • A single missing tooth
  • Multiple missing teeth
  • Several teeth with an implant-supported bridge
  • A full upper or lower arch
  • Teeth lost from injury, decay, or gum disease

At A Glance

  • Permanently replaces one, several, or all missing teeth
  • Functions, looks, and feels like natural teeth
  • Helps prevent jawbone loss after tooth loss
  • Restores chewing ability, speech, and smile confidence
  • Implant-supported solutions for single teeth, bridges, and full arches

Why Choose Dental Implants?

Dental implants are considered the gold standard for replacing missing teeth because they restore both function and long-term oral health.

Benefits Include:

  • Natural appearance and feel
  • Improved chewing ability
  • Clearer speech
  • Prevention of jawbone deterioration
  • Long-lasting results
  • No slipping or movement
  • Protection of surrounding healthy teeth
  • Improved facial support and confidence

With proper care, dental implants can last for decades.

Who Is a Candidate for Dental Implants?

Most healthy adults with missing teeth are candidates for dental implants.

You may qualify if you have:

  • One or more missing teeth
  • Healthy gums
  • Adequate jawbone volume
  • Good overall health
  • A commitment to maintaining oral hygiene

Even if you’ve been told you don’t have enough bone, procedures like bone grafting or sinus augmentation may make implant treatment possible.

During your consultation, our surgeons will evaluate your oral health using advanced CBCT imaging to determine the best treatment plan for your needs.

Our Dental Implant Process

Step 1: Comprehensive Consultation

Your treatment begins with a complete examination that includes:

  • Digital X-rays
  • 3D CBCT imaging
  • Medical history review
  • Oral examination
  • Personalized treatment planning

We’ll explain every step of the process and answer all of your questions before treatment begins.

Step 3: Healing and Integration

Over the next several months, the implant naturally bonds with your jawbone.

This creates a stable foundation that closely mimics a natural tooth root.

Step 2: Implant Placement Surgery

Dental implant surgery is performed using precise surgical techniques to maximize accuracy and comfort.

Depending on your needs, we may recommend:

  • Local anesthesia
  • IV sedation
  • General anesthesia for complex procedures

Most patients experience less discomfort than they expect and return home the same day.

Step 4: Final Restoration

Once healing is complete, your restorative dentist will attach your custom dental crown, bridge, or implant-supported prosthesis.

The result is a beautiful, fully functional smile that looks and feels natural.

Full Arch Dental Implants

Full-Arch Dental Implants

Patients missing most or all of their teeth may benefit from full-arch dental implant treatment.

Using strategically placed implants, we can support an entire row of replacement teeth without requiring an implant for every missing tooth.

Benefits include:

  • Greater stability than dentures
  • Improved comfort
  • Stronger biting force
  • Better speech
  • Reduced bone loss
  • Long-term confidence

Our surgeons work closely with your restorative dentist to create a comprehensive treatment plan tailored to your goals.

Bone Grafting for Dental Implants

Not everyone has enough healthy jawbone to immediately support dental implants.

If bone loss has occurred after tooth loss or periodontal disease, bone grafting may be recommended before implant placement.

Bone grafting helps:

  • Restore lost bone volume
  • Improve implant stability
  • Support long-term implant success
  • Preserve facial structure

Our surgeons routinely perform advanced bone grafting procedures as part of implant treatment.
